Honoring Your Bridesmaids Opinions

For a more enjoyable bridesmaid dress shopping experience, it is best to discuss your bridal vision ahead of time if possible. Understanding your ladies’ potential dress issues or body image considerations may help you come to an agreeable compromise before issues arise. If you are set on your dress selection, be sure to articulate that so no one is surprised or upset by the process. Be honest with your hopes for your big day to avoid as much drama as possible. New York Bride & Groom of Raleigh offers a wide selection of exceptional bridesmaid dresses with beautiful options for every body type and style preference.

Bridesmaid Survival Tips

Being a bridesmaid is an honor and an opportunity to share joy. The bride and her best ladies need to keep both of these things in mind to make the happiest memories possible. The wedding day will fly by; you will spend many more hours in the preparation zone so make the most of it. To have the best possible experience, stay focused on the end result and take these words of wisdom from the folks at Self:

“For the bride, a wedding is one of the major life changes that affects them in a big way emotionally,” says Bonior. “The bride goes through a whirlwind of emotions, from excitement and happiness to stress. And that sort of storm can be very easily be taken out negatively on the person’s friend or bridesmaid. When you’re a bridesmaid, you can’t turn it off. You can’t just decide to get some space from the bride, because you have to respect the bride. You have to be there. You have to kind of do what she says, whereas normally, if someone was going through a crazy time, you can get a little space. As a bridesmaid it’s very hard to get space.” Read more at Self

Dzage Bridesmaids, style 8051: This flawless chiffon dress effortlessly flows with any silhouette. The criss-crossed ruched bodice is extremely flattering and adds eye-catching detail. Available sizes: 0-28. Available in multiple colors (shown in black). Also comes in a full-length version.

Planning Ahead

Remind your girls to bring their shoes and undergarments to the fitting session. Have water, juice, and high protein snacks on hand to prevent low blood sugar drama and keep everyone focused on the task at hand. Similarly, delegate someone to handle snacks and beverages on your wedding day so that you have refreshments organized. Fainting at the altar is not the look anyone is going for. Here are some hydration tips to keep in mind:

Cool Off With Some Cucumber Water

Did you know that it’s been proven that cucumbers can reduce your body temperature by at least three degrees? According to Afeisha James-Kipps, cofounder of Wedspire, it’s true! She recommends sipping on some cucumber water infused with mint leaves to cool off and stay refreshed while you get ready. Add a splash of gin to give it a little kick after your walk down the aisle. More details at Brides

No Place For Dress Drama

Hopefully, on your special day you will have secure and supportive bridesmaids by your side. However, if you feel resistance from anyone who’s not thrilled about what she’s being asked to wear, stay calm and share the following, which should put things into perspective:

I have a box full of bridesmaid dresses that range from emerald green to dead of night black. However, I also have a box full of precious memories. I’ve witnessed girls who thought they’d never get married finally find true love. I’ve seen my brother, who almost never cries, let the tears stream down his face as he saw his bride for the first time walk down aisle. Every moment was beyond priceless. Additional details at CBN

Bring your best ladies and come find your perfect plus-size wedding gown.

Morilee, style 3203: Organza and tulle enchantment captivates in this sweetheart bridal gown. Beaded appliques add dimension and exquisite detail at the waist. Available colors: White/Silver, Ivory/Silver.

If you’re ready to start the search for your plus-size gown, check out these shopping tips from Brides.com to get the process rolling:

Most couture wedding dress designers design up to a size 20-24 even if they don’t have plus-size lines separated out in their collection.

Be open to different styles

Just as you shouldn’t let your shape preclude you from your dream designer, also don’t let it overly dictate the style of the dress. Yes, there are some silhouettes that you will find work better for your body shape, but you might surprise yourself with the variety of looks that you can wear. “I’ve had so many curvier brides say they don’t want a strapless dress, but then find a dress that fits them and gives them the right support, and nine times out of 10, they fall in love and end up with a strapless dress,” Sabatino says.

Buy the size that fits the biggest part of your body

A lot of brides might think that buying a smaller wedding dress will motivate them to shed weight before the wedding, but the truth is, it just adds a lot of unnecessary stress. “A consultant at the salon will measure you and suggest the right size,” she explains. “And you always have to go with the biggest size. This means, that if you’re bust is measuring a size 12, but your hips are measuring a size 18 — you should buy the dress in a size 18 and alter it down to accommodate the rest of your body.” Read more at Brides.com

When it comes to finding the perfect dress, as stated above, one of the keys is simply trying on a variety of gown styles and remaining open-minded about the possibilities. It might seem easy to judge a dress on the hanger, but it isn’t. You have to try it on and see how it works with your body.

Allure Bridals, style W330: This classic silhouette offers brides a tulle and lace applique dress with a sweet keyhole back and trailing lace skirt. Sensational Swarovski crystal sash and contour straps offer elegant support. Available sizes: 14-32. Available colors: White/Silver, Ivory/Silver.

Individual Awesomeness Is Crucial

Our experienced bridal consultants want you to love every aspect of your gown. Our staff will help you define your wishlist and then work with you to realize your bridal vision. If you’re in need of style ideas to get started, here are some tips on choosing a silhouette:

Fuller figure brides come in two categories: the apples and the pears.

Apple brides should opt for a ballgown style dress with an A-line cut.  This will help tuck in the torso while adding volume to the lower half – evening out the proportions.  Beware, however, of the evil spaghetti-straps and awkward fitting corsets.  This can cause additional bumps and lumps that you really don’t want.

Pear shaped brides, on the other hand, have a bit more room to play with in terms of style compared to their apple counterparts.  Pear shaped brides look stunning in an Empire waist dress, especially strapless ones!  This adds that extra “oomph” to the top half while a fuller skirt can work with the curves you have in your lower half.  Stay away from ballroom style dresses, though!  Extra material, crinoline and hoops will just add volume to an area of extra curve and will make you appear bottom-heavy.

Thin brides can wear almost anything although if you’re too thin, halter style dresses (or even those with straps) can accentuate your collar bones and take attention away from the rest of you.

Finally, busty brides, regardless of their shape, should make sure that they choose a dress with enough support for a 12+ hour wedding day!  If you find your dress is slipping off your bust in the change room of the bridal store, there’s no way you’ll get through an entire wedding without a wardrobe malfunction! Additional details at Ten 2 Ten Photography

The Williams Wedding

Couple: John and Alexia Williams

Wedding Date: September 10, 2016

Location: The Bradford, New Hill, NC

The Wedding Dress: Justin Alexander, style 8795

Photography: Tina Kelly, 360 Vision Events

More Details: Our wedding was absolutely perfect. After our engagement, I spent many days looking on Pinterest and fell in love with the concept of black and white stripes. It’s so classy. Along with our black and white theme, I decided to incorporate blush and gold as accent colors, which made everything even more vintage and romantic. It was absolutely amazing how our wedding planner and design coordinator Dana, from C&D Events, was able to turn my Pinterest vision into a reality with her team. My favorite part of the wedding was getting to marry my best friend and dancing the night away with around 200 family members and friends.

I loved my wedding dress. Before visiting New York Bride & Groom, I had already narrowed down my wishlist to wedding dresses with beautiful trains and full skirts — drama! When I saw my dress on the hanger, I was mesmerized by the beautiful laser-cut lace and full dramatic skirt. I tried on many other dresses during my visit, but still came back to this one. When I put it on a second time I started crying and just knew it was the one I wanted. Our bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos also came from NYB&G of Raleigh. The bridesmaid dresses were very different due to their striped pattern, but the silhouette was perfect and the pattern was ideal for our theme.

New York Bride & Groom is Raleigh’s Tuxedo Rental Headquarters

Stephen Geoffrey, style 602: Up the style quotient in an ivory tuxedo jacket with a sleek, satin notched lapel. Our featured tux (pictured above) is the perfect choice for a sophisticated, warm weather affair. Customize the look with coordinating pleated trousers in ivory or black.

Finding the ideal formal wear doesn’t have to be scary for the grooms party. In fact, we promise it will be painless. We can make that vow because New York Bride & Groom offers the guys their own tuxedo rental department as well as their own shop attendants to help simplify everything. Our experienced consultants will help everyone assemble their suits and make sure that the correct measurements are taken and the orders are properly placed. Best of all, we stock samples of every suit so you can feel the material and see the true color. There’s no guesswork like with most other salons, where you’re only option is ordering from a catalog or an online gallery.

The following tips from The Knot are a great starting point when it’s time to dress the guys:

His suit or tux should fit the formality

At the most basic level, his attire should be appropriate for your venue and fit with the overall vibe of the wedding. If your wedding is in the daytime or outdoors, it can be a bit more casual (think: lighter-colored suits made of fabrics like seersucker or khaki). If it’s an evening affair in a ballroom or swanky hotel, go with either a dark, well-tailored suit or for black-tie attire (a tux). Need to step it up one more notch? Suited for an extra-luxe venue, white-tie is the ultimate in formalwear. This means a black tailcoat, white shirt and white bow tie.

His fit should be perfect

Even the most expensive tux on the rack will look and feel awful if it doesn’t fit right. He should be able to move around easily — have him do lots of twists, turns and arm raises to make sure there’s plenty of mobility. Regardless of whether he’s renting or buying, most shops will custom tailor the purchase. Here are a few basic tailoring rules:

  • The jacket sleeve hem should fall at the wristbone with about one-fourth to one half inch of the shirt cuff showing below.
  • The bottom hem of the jacket should cover the butt and the vent shouldn’t pull open. If it does, that means it’s too tight.
  • The collar should lie flat on the back and sides of the neck without any gaps or bulges.
  • Pants should fit comfortably when standing and sitting and break across the top of the shoes so that they cover the top one-third.
  • A bow tie should fit snugly around the collar. See more tips at The Knot

Michael Kors, style 991: The Ultra Slim Berkeley offers a modern approach to a classic tuxedo style. Its trim and tapered fit and lightweight Venetian Super 130s wool provide the ultimate fit and feel in a tux. Details like the grosgrain notch lapel, matching buttons, and grosgrain-trimmed double besom pockets complete the look. Pair the ensemble with matching ultra slim fit pants and a matching wool vest for a 3-piece look. Also available in slim fit styling to accommodate all the members of your party.

Rent 5 Tuxedos and the Groom’s Tux is Free

It’s a very good day when you can take care of a major wedding day detail, find great-looking outfits and save money simultaneously. If 5 or more tuxedos are rented for your wedding, we’ll throw in another free of charge. This guarantees your grooms party will look outstanding, crosses an item off your list and saves money for the groom. Send all the guys in your wedding to NYB&G and we’ll make sure everything gets handled.

Tuxedo Matching 101

While the groom should clearly have some autonomy over his suit choice, it’s important that he choose a tuxedo that works with the rest of the wedding party’s look (particularly the bride, of course) and fits the formality of the ceremony. Check out the following article for suggestions to help the groom find a complementary tux:

Is the bride’s dress ivory, or is it white?

Although the grooms may not know exactly what they are looking for when they walk into Street Tuxedo (Nashville, TN), Mark says the brides who accompany them usually have a pretty good idea themselves! Whether the groom is going for a traditional look or a trendier adaptation, one of the first questions Mark will ask is whether the bride’s gown is ivory or white. This helps determine what color shirts the men in the wedding party will wear.

What color are the bridesmaids wearing?

Next, it is important to find out what color the bridesmaids are wearing in order to match or complement the vests and ties the men decide on. While many men choose to wear the regular neck ties with their formal wear, Mark has noticed bow ties becoming increasingly popular with grooms as well. It all depends on the level of formality of the event and individual tastes of the couples. Continue reading at The Pink Bride

Tony Bowls, style 301: The Grey Portofino tuxedo is a fashion-forward choice for a sophisticated affair. It’s tailored in a soft, super-fine wool blend. Trend-right design details, including a one-button closure and contrasting black satin peak lapels, add to the clean lines and tailored look. Pair with matching flat front, modern slim fit pants.

Deciphering Wedding Gown Necklines at NYB&G Raleigh

Allure Couture, style C404: Our featured dress (pictured above) is a slim-fitting silhouette that features dimensional detailing, cinched at an empire waist. The delicately scalloped neckline offers a romantic edge to this lace and English net design. Available sizes: 2-32. Available colors: Latte/Ivory/Silver, Ivory/Silver, White/Silver.

Negotiating The Necklines

It’s amazing how the neckline of your wedding dress can completely change your entire look (and also how you feel about a gown). The width, lay and style of the bodice and associated straps (or lack thereof) define your upper arms, back, shoulders and décolletage. It can even influence how elongated your silhouette becomes right down to your waistline. Our experienced Bridal Consultants at NYB&G of Raleigh can help you find the neckline that perfectly complements your size, shape and personal style.

To begin, the following illustration provides a wonderful visual of the various neckline styles you will encounter on your wedding dress search:

new york bride groom wedding dress bridesmaid dress rental tuxedo accessories raleigh nc

Next, the easy-to-follow outline below, compliments of The Knot, breaks down the pros and cons of a variety of wedding gown necklines:

Off-the-Shoulder

Just like the name implies, this neckline sits below the shoulders to showcase a woman’s collarbone and shoulders, with sleeves that cover part of the upper arm. While this style is super flattering to medium- or full-chested women, an off-the-shoulder neckline will look good on almost all figures. But if you’ve got fuller arms and are uncomfortable with baring your shoulders, you may wan to consider a portrait neckline instead.
Good for: Full-chested and pear-shaped women
Bad for: Broad shoulders, fuller arms

Portrait

Similar to an off-the-shoulder style but made with more fabric, the portrait neckline is characterized by a wide, soft scoop from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other.
Good for: Fuller arms and prominent collarbones
Bad for: Undefined collarbones

Scoop

The scoop, a U-shaped neckline, is a universally flattering classic. It can be cut low, and quite often the scoop will continue on the back of the dress.
Good for: Just about anyone

(List continues below image)

Rebecca Ingram, style Vernice: Gorgeous lace appliques enchant this tulle A-line, showcasing a sweetheart neckline trimmed in Swarovski crystals and delicate pearls and beads. Bodice features a corset closure or inner corset closure and covered buttons over zipper. A scalloped hem completes this mesmerizing gown. Available sizes: 0-28. Available colors: White, Ivory, Ivory over Light Gold (pictured).

Sweetheart

The sweetheart neckline — which is actually shaped like the top half of a heart — is a wonderful option for fuller-chested women because it really accentuates the décolletage. The sweetheart is often done with an overlay of sheer material that rises higher than the heart shape, giving the torso a longer line and also making the neck look longer.
Good for: Serious décolletage
Bad for: The décolletage-impaired

Jewel

Also known as the T-shirt neckline, due to it’s similarity to an actual T-shirt, the jewel neckline is round and sits at the base of the throat.
Good for: Small-chested woman (it will make you look bustier)
Bad for: Large-chested women (it will make you look bustier too)

V-neck

The name says it all: The neckline dips down in the front (and sometimes in the back as well) in a V-shape, de-emphasizing the bustline.
Good for: B or C cups
Bad for: Anyone bigger or smaller

Strapless

The strapless neckline is a popular choice with busty brides, and it looks wonderful when paired with either a sweetheart or straight-across square bodice.
Good for: Great shoulders and collarbones
Bad for: Smaller-chested women

Sabrina/Bateau

This shape gently follows the curve of the collarbone, almost to the tip of the shoulders — and it’s cut straight across so less of the decolletage shows. It can be paired with sleeves or a sleeveless style.
Good for: Small breasts
Bad for: The well-endowed More details at The Knot

Sincerity, style 3855: This embroidered and beaded lace and tulle tea-length ball gown offers a sweet sabrina neckline. The plunging back finishes with fabric buttons harmonizing with an elegant bow to define the waist. Available in Ivory (pictured) and White.

Essense of Australia, style D2275: Our featured dress (pictured above) is a princess silhouette with a lace and tulle skirt. This stunner was made for the statement-making bride. The bold, lace bodice — complete with sweetheart neckline — is coupled with a full ball gown skirt that’s detailed with lace appliques extending to the train. The back closure is a zipper beneath your choice of pearl buttons or fabric buttons.

Rebecca Ingram, style Yvonne: This enchanting A-line features a lovely lace bodice and sweetheart neckline. Layers of tulle part in skirt’s front, revealing a layer of Donelle crepe. Finished covered buttons over zipper and inner corset closure. Lace jacket with three-quarter sleeves and illusion bateau neckline sold separately.

More Details About Silhouettes

In general, some dress silhouettes work better with some body types than others. One of the keys to looking amazing in your wedding gown is finding the silhouette that highlights the things you want to be noticed and downplays those you don’t.

Empire Waist

This high-waist style hits just below the bustline, de-emphasizing the waistline and hips while making you look longer and leaner — the perfect solution for women looking to play down their middle. This style is less flattering if you have a large chest or full hips because it will overemphasize those features.

Sheath

Simple and sophisticated, this style looks best on petite or slender brides who benefit from its elongated lines and formfitting cut, which gently hugs the body from head to toe. Its slim silhouette lengthens the body, giving the illusion of height, which won’t overwhelm a smaller frame the way a full ball gown could.

Ballgown

This feminine style, known by its trademark full skirt, fitted bodice and natural waist, looks particularly good on boyish figures because it gives the illusion of enhanced curves. It’s also great for pear shapes, since the fitted bodice defines your waist while the billowy tiers skim over your hips. Tall brides will appear statuesque in voluminous silhouettes, and busty brides will love this shape too, since it creates balanced proportion.

Trumpet

Often confused with a mermaid silhouette, a trumpet silhouette has a straight-lined bodice (unlike the body-hugging one of a mermaid silhouette) that subtly flares toward the hem, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) starting at the knee. It’s another popular option for flaunting your curves, but it’s slightly easier to move around in.

Mermaid

For a dress that contours to the body this slim, tapered, curve-hugging style follows the line of your hips and thighs and then flares out below the knee. With a cut that hugs so closely to the hips, this silhouette works best for brides looking to show off their curvy figures. More details at The Knot

Stella York, style 6343: This scalloped lace keyhole back wedding dress by Stella York brings the drama. Lace over matte-side lustre satin in a modified mermaid silhouette is complemented by soft sequin sparkle and floral patterned lace. The kissing scallop back with illusion lace is accented by delicate pearl buttons creating a truly unique style. An elegant train is finished by a wide lace trim and features an extraordinary cut-out that brings attention to the dramatic details of the lace — perfect for a fairytale exit.

The Dickens Wedding

Couple: Al and Courtney Dickens

Wedding Date: August 6, 2016

Location: Jones Chapel at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC

The Wedding Dress: Stella York, style 6125

Photography: Ally & Bobby Willix Fine Art Photography

More Details: Al and I knew we wanted a traditional wedding, but we didn’t really have a theme other than utilizing the ceremony location and all the beautiful greenery around the chapel. We kept everything very simple, using florals and greenery to decorate the chapel and reception venue. We loved our team of vendors and the highlight for us was having all of our favorite people in the same room to celebrate with us and witness our marriage. It was our “Best Day Ever” and we are so grateful to the Lord for bringing us together.

My favorite part of my wedding dress was the train. I tried on around 50 dresses and had a difficult time finding a fit-and-flare that incorporated detail, a train and the back I was looking for. After going to New York Bride & Groom of Raleigh and finding this dress, I knew it was the one within a few moments.

The chapel train adds luxurious drama.

Here’s a bit of Watters’ background info and design philosophy straight from the source:

Unsurpassed Beauty: At Watters, luxurious fabrics, exquisite details, and flattering, feminine silhouettes are essential. We only do gorgeous.

Vatana remains the head and the heart of it all, passionately leading the design team in a truly collaborative effort.

Wedding Dress Shopping: The Earlier, the Better

Your wedding gown is one of the most important components of your big day. Give yourself plenty of time to make the perfect choice, avoid shipping delays or having to rush to complete the alterations in time. As soon as your venue and the style of your wedding is decided, we recommend coming in to start perusing our sensational collection. Why not make it a group event and bring the entire gang? You want to ensure that your groom, the bridesmaids and the groomsmen are all dressed ideally to be captured forever in your wedding photos. Our separate tuxedo department is located under the same roof but it gives the men their own space so they feel comfortable shopping too.

This advice on being timely with your dress shopping makes the point well:

Start Early

Most brides-to-be are surprised to hear you’ll need at least six to eight months to get your gown — and that’s if you’re really decisive. If you’re not really sure what you want, or are a picky shopper, it’s best to start looking eight to 10 months before your wedding date. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time; waiting until the last minute may limit your selection of dresses, or force you to make a quick decision you may regret later. As soon as you’ve found your dream dress, allow at least eight weeks for alterations. Continue reading at Watters

Willowby by Watters, style Aundin: This is the dress for the it-girl in all of us. With a stunning head-to-toe Adella Stretch Lace, neither comfort nor style is compromised. The star of this gown is the bold open back with thoughtfully placed straps that draw the eye and a sweep train that adds a bridal touch.

NYB&G Is the Place To Discover Your Bridal Style

Wedding dress shopping is supposed to be fun. At least, that is what we believe here at New York Bride and Groom of Raleigh. We provide the bride and groom, as well as the entire wedding party, with a stress-free shopping experience and a vast selection of designer wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses and rental tuxedos in our spacious modern luxury salon. It’s easy to see why we are the premier bridal shop in the Triangle.

Wtoo Bridal, style Bellavista (12608): Our featured gown (pictured above) has an illusion sweetheart neckline with lace-appliqued bodice. Lace motifs adorn dotted net on the ball gown skirt. Finished with dotted net buttons to the waist and a chapel train. Also available without lace motifs on the skirt (style 12608P).

If you need a little help tapping into your inner bride, we came across a couple of fun quizzes that may give you some wedding dress inspiration. Plus, narrowing down your silhouette preferences ahead of time can provide some loose guidelines for dress shopping. Feel free to bring your quiz results to the salon with you. We can use them to help you find the wedding dress of your dreams. The quizzes can be found here and here.

Sensational Style for Every Bride

Essense of Australia, style D2262: An updated silhouette for the traditional bride, this lace wedding dress with illusion back from Essense of Australia is simply dreamy. Featuring organic lace, the sweetheart neckline of this style extends beautifully into a slight cap sleeve that frames the face perfectly. A diamond-shape illusion back highlights the back of the gown, while layers of lace-detailed tulle give the train a perfect soft and unique texture. A soft scattering of sequins throughout the gown gives it a subtle shimmer and completes the look. The back of this gown zips up beneath fabric buttons. Available in plus sizes.

Experiment With Different Silhouettes

Don’t feel discouraged if your reflection in the bridal suite doesn’t match the tattered magazine clippings you’ve been carrying around in your purse for months. It’s very common to fall in love with a gown in a photo and then realize once you have it on that it doesn’t look or feel as fetching on you thought it would. No worries, ladies. Our expert bridal consultants can help you hone in on the features you love and those you’re not thrilled with to make some wonderful recommendations. Trying on a variety of dress styles will help you broaden your vision and open up to a variety of beautiful possibilities.
